Students Striving for Sustainability, Environmental Political Interactive Change, and the Social Action Committee of Aquinas College are offering a free showing of Food Inc. at the Wealth Street Theater on Monday November 30th at 6pm. This movie delves into the American agricultural system and the policies which affect our country. The film reveals the systemic connection between the importance of buying local and organic food with what we eat, how it is produced and the prevalent human illnesses like diabetes, obesity, cancer and lack of proper nutrition. Dots are also connected with genetic engineering, farm worker protection, ethical animal treatment and the environmental impacts of our agriculture system.
Please stay after for a Q&A from our two sponsors Slow Food, West Michigan Co-op and friends from Crane Dance Farm, Fulton Street Farmers ! Market and Local First . They will be talking about their organizations and answering questions about the challenges and opportunities we face within the American agricultural system. See www.foodincmovie.com more information regarding the movie and please contact Brett Little BAL002@aquinas.edu with any questions or comments concerning the event

Greenhouse Gas Report and Carbon Reduction Tips
Posted on November 13, 2009 at 4:03 pm under Aquinas | 75 views | Comments Off

Submitted by Jessica Eimer

With sustainability fighting its way into every mainstream conversation, it is only fitting that Aquinas takes a moment to shine some light on our own efforts to demonstrate our continued leadership in the field.  Aquinas has recently fulfilled one more requirement of the ACUPCC by completing a Greenhouse Gas Report. The American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) is an effort put forth by a network of colleges and universities with a mission to accelerate progress towards climate neutrality and sustainability by empowering the higher education sector to educate students, create solutions, and provide leadership-by-example for the rest of society.

Click to see Aquinas' Greenhouse Gas Report

The Greenhouse Gas Report takes a closer look at Aquinas' carbon footprint and poses a level playing field for comparison between other schools carbon outputs. A carbon footprint analysis measures the amount of carbon emitted due to the operation of an organization, whether it be through heating and cooling, lighting, transportation, and so on. Taking the time to prepare and execute a carbon footprint analysis is not an easy process, but Aquinas is loyal to our continued commitment to sustainability. The information in the report will guide our development
